We already know that people with red hair and pale skin are more sensitive to UV light than others and as such, great care should be taken in any type of tanning programme. However, a new study published on 31/10/12 has demonstrated that it is in fact the red pigment that is responsible for melanoma formation and not the exposure to UV light;

A significant finding was that avoidance of UV light would not prevent the development of melanoma in red-haired, pale-skinned people. While this research conducted by David Fisher at the Massachusetts General Hospital raises further questions about the causes of melanoma, one thing is clear, the current belief that exposure to UV light is the primary cause cannot be accepted and further research must be done
