Spray Tanning: How to avoid a patchy, streaky or uneven spray tan

How to Avoid a Patchy, Streaky or Uneven Spray Tan - The Tanning Shop

Want to avoid a patchy, streaky spray tan to achieve that flawless, sun-kissed glow? It isn’t just about the booth. It’s all in the prep!

Whether you’re new to spray tanning or a seasoned pro, following a few key steps before your appointment can help you avoid patchy, streaky, or uneven results. Here are our top tips for the ultimate even tan.

1. Exfoliate and Moisturise the Day Before

Think of your skin as a canvas awaiting a masterpiece – and exfoliation is step one to a smooth, even finish. Gently exfoliate 24 hours before your spray tan to remove dry or dead skin cells. Follow up with a light moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated (but not oily).

Top tip: Avoid oil-based scrubs and heavy moisturisers on tanning day – these can block the spray solution.

2. Shave or Wax at Least 24 Hours Before

Hair removal should be done no later than the day before your appointment. Shaving or waxing too close to your session can leave open pores, which may collect the tanning solution and result in dark spots or uneven patches.

3. Clean Skin Is Essential on the Day

On the day of your appointment, keep your skin clean and free from any products. This means no:

  • Deodorant
  • Body lotion
  • Perfume
  • Makeup

It can be a good idea to take a clear-water shower (no soaps or gels) a few hours before your session to remove any residual products from your skin.

4. Choose Loose, Dark Clothing

Wear loose-fitting, dark clothes and slip-on shoes to your appointment. Tight clothing or seams can rub against your fresh tan and cause streaks or uneven patches as well as potentially causing the tan to streak or transfer.

Don’t worry if your tan transfers slightly onto clothing. This is normal and will wash out of most fabrics.

5. Apply Barrier Cream to Key Areas

Just before your session begins, generously apply barrier cream to your hands, elbows, knees, and feet, paying extra attention to the nails. The cream acts as a protective barrier, ensuring these areas do not turn darker than the rest of your body. This step helps achieve an even and natural-looking tan.

With the right preparation, your spray tan will look smooth, even, and completely natural. Avoiding streaks or patchiness is easy when you exfoliate, moisturise correctly, and follow our simple before-tan tips.
