sCan you shower after a Sunbed or Spray Tan?

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is: “When can I shower after my tanning session?”
Whether you’ve used a sunbed or opted for a spray tan, post-tan shower timing plays a key role in how your tan develops and lasts. So, let’s break it down!
How long after a sunbed can you shower?
When it comes to showering after a sunbed/ tanning bed session, the good news is that you can hop in the shower right away if you’d like! However, if you’ve applied a bronzer lotion, it’s advisable to wait a couple of hours after your session to allow the bronzer in the lotion ample time to develop and enhance your tan. Similarly, with an accelerator lotion, they may continue to work following your session so you may want to hold off for a couple of hours.
The good news? If you haven’t applied any special tanning products, you can shower immediately after using a sunbed without affecting your results.
However, if you’ve used a bronzer or accelerator lotion, it’s best to wait 2–4 hours before showering. This gives the ingredients enough time to continue developing and deepening your colour.

Showering After A Spray Tan
Spray tans are a little different. The golden rule is to wait 6–8 hours before showering—this allows the DHA (the active tanning ingredient) to fully react with the skin and develop your colour.
Rapid-developing spray tans may allow shorter wait times (as little as 2–4 hours), but always follow the advice provided by your technician or the product instructions.
Best Shower Practices For Tanned Skin
Once it’s time to rinse off, follow these gentle steps to preserve your glow:
- Use lukewarm water: Hot water can dry out the skin and affect the tan’s finish.
- Avoid harsh soaps and scrubs: Opt for gentle, moisturising body washes. Avoid exfoliating products—especially in the first 24–48 hours.
- Pat dry, don’t rub: Gently pat your skin with a towel rather than rubbing to prevent streaks or patchiness.
- Moisturise daily: Keeping your skin hydrated is key for extending the life of your tan.
