They told us sunbeds were bad – were they wrong all along?

Adam Mooney, founder and owner of the The Feel Good Group, which owns The Tanning Shop, would beg to differ. “The new report aligns with our long-standing belief that light exposure is crucial for optimal health. We are concerned about the ongoing negative portrayal of light – for too long, public health authorities have overlooked the positive effects of heliotherapy.”

When used responsibly, there’s even an argument that sunbeds can be safer than sun, owing to the shorter exposure. “We take responsible tanning very seriously,” says Mooney, who stresses that all customers are provided with free eye protection, sessions are tightly monitored, restricted and recorded via biometric fingerprints to prevent customers (who must be aged over 18) from over-exposing. Staff undertake full training in how to provide a skin consultation to determine exposure times. No “Skin 1 Type” customers (defined by the Fitzpatrick Skin Type chart as “highly sensitive, always burns, never tans”) are permitted to use the beds.
