Summary
You’ve perfected your prep and just experienced the luxury of an automated spray tan at The Tanning Shop. Next step: maintaining your glow. Spray tan aftercare starts the moment you exit the booth; from what you wear to how long you wait to shower, how you care for your tan in the hours and days after your appointment is key to keeping your glow looking gorgeous for longer. Here, we share our top spray tan aftercare tips to help you get the most out of your tan.
How to Care for Your Spray Tan – The First 24 Hours
The day of your tan is crucial to how your tan develops and how long it lasts. Before your appointment, complete your spray tan prep to ensure your skin is smooth, hydrated, and primed for spray tanning – our preparation guide covers when to shave, products to avoid, and how to apply barrier cream for the ideal base.
Did you know that post-tan spray care matters just as much as your prep? Your colour will continue to develop for up to 24 hours after your session, and there are several things you can do (or not do) to help your tan develop beautifully.
What to wear after a spray tan
Dark, loose-fitting clothes are your post-tanning best friend. Not only will darker material prevent colour transfer and staining, but a looser fit avoids friction, rubbing, or anything digging in, all of which can leave marks. Avoid tight clothes like jeans, leggings, bras, and socks – go with baggy Ts, loose, long dresses or skirts, shorts, or jogging bottoms, and opt for sandals or flip flops instead of closed shoes or trainers.
Avoid water, workouts, and steam
You’ll want to keep your skin as dry as possible while your colour develops, so avoid any environment that will put you in contact with water, chlorine, or steam. Sweating also affects tan development, so save workouts for after your tan has fully developed.

When to shower
Our range of premium tanning solutions develop within 24 hours of your appointment. For that reason, it’s best to avoid showering until your colour has fully developed. We know that’s not always possible, so if you feel the need for a quick freshen-up, you can shower after 6 to 8 hours. Keep your first shower to a gentle rinse in lukewarm water – don’t use soaps, body washes, or exfoliants, and use your towel to pat dry instead of rubbing.
Lock in moisture
After the first 24 hours, moisturise to keep skin hydrated and glowing, and prevent your tan from looking dry. Opt for a gentle lotion free from mineral oil and alcohol; oils can break down DHA, and alcohol dries skin out, both of which can leave your tan looking uneven. For best results, use one of our tan extenders, specifically formulated to nourish tanned skin and maintain your colour.
How to Maintain a Spray Tan
After those first 24 hours, it’s all about keeping your tan looking fresh and helping it fade naturally when colour starts to go. Here are our top spray tan aftercare tips for the days after your appointment.

Moisturise daily
That oil-free lotion isn’t just for after the first 24 hours. Top up your hydration levels by applying every day, ideally in the morning and the evening. This will prevent skin from drying out and keep your colour looking stronger for longer.
For an extra hydration boost, include WellFit skincare Hydrate sessions in your weekly routine. The luxurious treatment sprays a lightweight mist of active ingredients over your whole body in just minutes – the ideal way to boost moisture without overloading the skin.
Avoid exfoliants
With your skin looking fresh and golden, the last thing you want to do is strip it all away. Choose gentle skincare products and avoid harsh exfoliants and soaps, or products containing acids. If you can, avoid exfoliating for at least 48 hours and aim to hold off until your colour begins to fade (usually around days 5 to 7).
Skip shaving and waxing
Just like exfoliating products, shaving removes the top layer of skin, so should be avoided in the days following your spray tan. Don’t book a wax in the week after your tan as this will completely strip away colour. Instead, time hair removal for the days before your spray tan session.
No long soaks
While showers are fine once your tan has developed, you should still avoid swimming, hot baths, long showers, hot tubs, or saunas. Anything that keeps skin wet for long periods can cause colour to fade faster or unevenly.
Stay hydrated
Healthy, hydrated skin isn’t just about the lotion you use. It’s also about what you put into your body. Drinking plenty of water every day helps keep your skin hydrated from within, so you can enjoy supple, glowing skin for longer.
Spray Tan Aftercare Do’s and Don’ts
Looking for quick and simple aftercare advice for spray tanning? Our do’s and don’ts checklist covers all the essentials in one place.
Do:
- Wait a minimum of 6–8 hours before showering (ideally 24 hours)
- Rinse with lukewarm water only for your first shower – no products
- Pat skin dry gently; don’t rub
- Moisturise daily with a lightweight, oil-free lotion
- Stay hydrated to help your tan fade evenly
Don’t:
- Exfoliate for 5–7 days
- Shave for around 48 hours (longer, if you can)
- Use products containing mineral oil, alcohol, or harsh ingredients
- Spend long periods in chlorinated pools, hot tubs, or steamy baths
- Worry if your tan looks darker before rinsing – this is just the colour guide that will wash away
Your Spray Tan Development Timeline
How your care for your colour changes depending on where you are in the process. Our handy timeline explains what’s going on with your tan and how to encourage a flawless, even finish at every step.
0-6 hours | If you’ve chosen a solution containing bronzer, you’ll notice an immediate bronze glow that intensifies over the hours. This is just the colour guide and will wash off when you first shower. If you’ve gone with a clear spray tan solution, there’s no instant bronze – your colour just develops naturally. Tip: Wear dark, loose clothing and avoid water. |
|---|---|
6-8 hours | This is the earliest point for a first rinse. Your tan is still developing, so keep your shower short, or wait until it’s fully developed (24 hours) before showering. Tip: Rinse in lukewarm water and don’t use any products. |
24 hours | Your tan is fully developed. If you haven’t already, now’s the time to shower to reveal your tan’s true shade. Tip: Gently pat your skin dry and apply an oil-free moisturiser after showering. |
Days 1-3 | Colour is at its richest and most even. If you’ve tanned for a special occasion, schedule your spray a couple of days in advance so you can enjoy your best colour. Tip: Keep skin hydrated, drinking plenty of water and moisturising daily. |
Days 4-5 | Skin cells begin shedding naturally, softening the intensity of your tan. You’ll still have a sun-kissed glow, just not quite as rich as your initial colour. Tip: Use a tan extender lotion to prolong the life of your colour and encourage a natural fade. |
Days 5-7 | Colour starts to fade as skin cells turn over, returning to your natural skin tone. Tip: Begin gently exfoliating to ensure colour fades evenly. Exfoliated skin is also the ideal base for your next spray tan appointment, so this is a good time to rebook. |
FAQs
How long should a spray tan last?
With the right prep and aftercare, your professional spray tan should last up to a week, with colour starting to fade from around day five. Follow our spray tan aftercare tips, moisturising daily, avoiding long soaks, and steering clear of exfoliants, and you’ll help your tan go the distance. Learn more about how to make your tan last longer and expert tan removal tips for when you’re ready for a fresh start.
How many days after a spray tan does it look best?
Your colour is usually at its richest and most even between one and three days after your appointment. That’s the sweet spot to plan around if you’re tanning for a special occasion, so book your session a couple of days ahead rather than the day before the event.
How long after a spray tan can I shower?
You can have a short, lukewarm rinse from 6 to 8 hours after your session, but our premium tanning solutions keep developing for up to 24 hours, so it’s best to wait the full 24 if you can. When you do shower, skip soaps and shower gels and just rinse with water.
Does a spray tan develop after you shower?
Yes. If you shower within the first 6 to 8 hours, your tan will keep developing for up to 24 hours afterwards, as long as you don’t scrub or exfoliate, gradually deepening to its true shade. That’s why we recommend a gentle rinse only for that first shower, saving cleansing products for the next day.
Should I wear underwear for a spray tan?
You’re welcome to wear underwear or tan nude at The Tanning Shop. If you choose underwear, we recommend dark material to avoid staining. Our spray tan booths are completely private, so if you’d rather avoid tan lines, you can choose to ditch the underwear altogether. Ask your consultant for more spray tan advice before your session.
