Summary
Winter air and central heating leave skin drier, so a winter spray tan needs a little extra care. In the lead-up to your session, gently exfoliate, moisturise twice a day (but not on the day), head home in loose, dark layers, and keep showers short and lukewarm afterwards to help your colour last.
As winter sets in, many of us long for the golden tans we enjoyed flaunting on beaches during the summer months. The good news is that a winter spray tan at the Tanning Shop can give you the head-to-toe glow you’re craving, even when the weather outside is far from glorious.
The catch? Cold air and central heating leave skin drier, so your tan needs a little more attention before and after your session. Here are our winter tanning tips to keep your skin soft and your colour even.
Why Does Your Winter Tan Need More Care?
Colder weather isn’t a friend to hydrated skin. Combine that with blustery winds and central heating, and your skin barrier can take a real knock. Cold air carries far less moisture than warmer air, but the ways we warm ourselves up – radiators and hot showers – dry skin out even more.
As you’ll know, dry skin and spray tans don’t mix well, so looking after your skin to avoid dryness, irritation, and flaking is a must during colder months. This applies for prep as much as aftercare, so follow our steps below for an even spray tan this winter.
How to Prepare for a Winter Spray Tan
Prepping for a winter spray tan is all about creating a soft, hydrated foundation by gently exfoliating and using a rich moisturiser in the days leading up to your session.

Buff away dryness
Exfoliation is non-negotiable in the winter, but the last thing we want you to do is frantically scrub at your dry patches and damage your skin further. Instead, use a gentle body exfoliant or exfoliating gloves in the days before your appointment to remove dry, flaky skin, paying close attention to the tougher skin on your elbows, knees, hands, and feet.
Amp up the moisture
Your lightweight summer lotion might not cut it in winter. Switch to a richer, more nourishing lotion to replenish lost moisture and lock in hydration. We recommend moisturising twice daily in the lead up to your spray tan appointment, skipping lotion on the day of your tan.
Top tip: apply moisturiser while skin is still damp for an added boost of hydration.
Add a full-body skin treatment
If your skin is still feeling dry when you arrive for your appointment, ask your tanning specialist about adding WellFit Hydrate to your session. Formulated with hyaluronic acid – a hero ingredient for skin hydration – the ultra-fine mist sprays in the same session as your tan solution to deliver lasting skin nourishment that helps your tan develop more evenly.
Regular spray tan prep still stands: shave at least 24 hours before, don’t wear makeup, lotion, perfume, or deodorant to your appointment, and apply barrier cream liberally to dry areas before the spray starts. These are just the added steps you can take to get the most out of your spray tan in winter.
What to Wear After a Spray Tan in Winter
We get it. No one wants to show up to an appointment in the snow wearing flip flops and a maxi dress. But what you wear immediately after your spray impacts the way it develops. Here’s what we recommend for those winter appointments:
- Loose-fitting joggers and roomy jumpers, so you stay warm without anything tight against your skin.
- Slip-on, open-toed shoes if possible. We don’t want you freezing your toes off, so if this isn’t an option, choose trainers over ankle boots to minimise rubbing.
- Avoid anything likely to dig in, such as bras and strappy tops.
- Cover up when you leave the salon if it’s raining or snowing so the weather doesn’t cause your tan to streak.
How to Maintain a Tan in the Winter
Your immediate spray tan aftercare stays more or less the same, no matter what season you visit: don’t shower until your tan has developed, avoid sweating and long soaks, and don’t exfoliate your skin in the days afterwards. Here are a few extra ways to help your winter spray tan last:

Turn down the shower heat
Nothing feels better than a hot shower or a long soak in the bath when you’ve been out in the cold, but hot water strips away your skin’s natural oils, leaving it dry (your tan’s nemesis). Instead, keep showers as short as you can and the water lukewarm to avoid drying out your skin.
Pat, don’t rub
Stepping out of a warm shower into a chilly bathroom makes you want to rub yourself dry fast, but that friction lifts dry, flaky winter skin, and your colour comes away with it. Pat yourself dry instead, then wrap up in a dressing gown to warm up. Go extra gently on elbows, knees, and hands, where winter dryness shows first.
Increase the humidity
There’s nothing you can do about the low humidity outside, but if you’re one to always have the heating blasting, consider running a humidifier to add a little moisture back into the atmosphere.
Protect your skin
Keep using your winter body lotion twice a day, ensuring it’s free from mineral oils that can break down your tan. You can switch to a hydrating tan extender lotion – just ask our team after your appointment – and our in-salon treatments can help boost your skin’s hydration. FAQs
How long before a Christmas party should I get a spray tan?
Book your spray tan a couple of days before the party. Solutions need a minimum of 6-8 hours to develop before your first rinse, and some keep developing for up to 24 hours, so a day or two’s head start lets your colour settle. With good aftercare, a spray tan typically lasts 4-7 days.
Should I choose a lighter spray tan shade in winter?
Skin is usually at its palest in winter, so a lighter or medium shade tends to look more natural than a deep holiday tan. You can always build up with your next session. Not sure which to choose? Our salon team can help you pick a shade that suits you.
Does a spray tan fade faster in winter?
Not necessarily. A spray tan develops on the outermost layer of your skin, so it fades as that layer naturally sheds. Dry winter skin flakes more easily, and those flakes take colour with them. Moisturise with an oil-free lotion every day to keep the fade even and skin nourished through the colder months.
Do I still need sun cream after a spray tan in winter?
You do. The colour in a spray tan comes from DHA reacting with the top layer of your skin, and it doesn’t work as a sunscreen. Keep using SPF when you’re out and about on winter days, just as you would in the summer.
